How to Iron Sewing Patterns

Yes, you can iron your sewing patterns! You can iron just about any paper in fact. Here’s how! Watch the video or continue reading:

I don’t usually iron patterns but sometimes if there are small details you need to mark accurately, or if the folds are really bad you might want to iron the pattern to flatten it out. It’s really easy to do!

You just turn your iron to a low or medium setting and turn off the steam. Flip the pattern over and test a small area. You only want to iron on the back of the tissue paper. If it looks good, go head and iron the pieces you need.

Increase the temperature of your iron if the wrinkles aren’t coming out easily. And don’t let the iron sit in one place for more than a moment. That’s all there is to 🙂

The more you sew, the more opportunity for mistakes you’ll have, especially when it comes to ironing – sorry to upset you, it’s just the way it goes! But once the horror fades those mistakes can become great stories!

My biggest ironing mishap happened when I was hemming slacks for a high profile client one late evening. The cord from my iron slipped under and got pressed into the hem, leaving a nasty black mark. I thought the cord had melted into the fabric! Luckily it pressed out and the color returned to normal, but it was a moment of panic I won’t soon forget.
